Ju Eng, in Chinese
means "a gathering of people with noble ideas". It was named by the
late Elder Mr Ang Oon
Hue, BBM, who was also Chairman and
Founder of the Ju Eng Primary School, during his
younger days.
The late Elder Ang Oon Hue,
BBM, purchased 2-acres of freehold land in Jalan Kayu in 1940s to build Ju Eng
Primary School. Later, he applied to
the government to convert the school into a nursing home to serve the poor,
elderly, frail and sick. Subsequently, he donated the 2 acres freehold land
to the government to build the nursing home governed by MOH.
Ju Eng Home for Senior Citizens
(JEH) was officially opened on 28 September 1996 by Brig. Gen. (NS) George Yeo, then Minister for Health. The Home accommodated 104
residents under its Phase I development. Due to Singapore's rapidly ageing
population and the surge for elderly nursing care, a new five-storey building
under Phase II was built and completed in September 2001. The two buildings
can now accomodate a total of 314 residents.
Ju Eng Home for Senior Citizens
has been granted charity status by the Commissioner of Charities and is
affiliated to the National Council of Social Services. It is licensed as a
Nursing Home under The Private Hospitals and Medical Clinics Act 1980.
